New Bloggers Could Become Overwhelmed…
July 25, 2008 by Morninglark
I am lucky that I have some computer knowledge. I have designed and maintained both static and content driven websites in the past.
Therefore I understand html, SEO, and most of the relevant things that would be needed on a website.
But blogging is a whole new experience. I have been trying to make the conversion, in my little brain …WOW. (ha,ha I am too old for this shit)
First you have to learn about RSS feeds. What the heck is that, and how do I code it up…oh you don’t. Its sort of automatic..just get this nifty plug in…Plug-in? Feedburner? OK got it.
Next, you need to get used to the idea, that you don’t have the ability to readily change the look and feel of each individual page.
The editors for blogs are not as robust, as Dreamweaver to produce a website. (heck they aren’t even as robust as using Microsoft frontpage)
Much of the stuff for blogging is open-source. (which is good and bad)
It’s great in the case of Wordpress, that actually updates and maintains the software.
It really blows for some of the plug-ins. They are not being maintained, and are lacking all forms of good documentation.
Then you try to arrange your right hand columns, and they tell you to activate ‘Widgets’. What the heck is a widget? And how can you tell if your theme is widget ready?
Webster’s New Millenniumâ„¢ Dictionary of English
| Main Entry: | widget |
| Part of Speech: | n |
| Definition: | an element of a graphical user interface such as a button or scroll bar; also, a module of software for a personalized Web page |
| Example: | The widget allows you to have “things to be happy about” on your Web site. |
| Etymology: | 1987 |
A widget lets me have things to be happy about…yeah ok..that helped a lot.
I would be happy if I understood the difference between a widget and a plug-in!
