Hosting with Godaddy was a nightmare!

July 13, 2008 by Morninglark

So after less than a month at Godaddy hosting..I realized that I just had to get better!

I have always used Godaddy to register domain names. The constant ads to sell you more stuff, were always annoying, but they got the job done.

I never actually hosted any of our domains there. We always had our own servers on Rackspace, or used something like Lunarpages.

Since I was just putting up a blog, I bought the “Deluxe Plan” with:

Plan Features
100 GB NOW 150 GB Space
1,000 GB NOW 1,500 GB Transfer

etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. yeah yeah..sure…

Sounded like I should be able to run ONE Wordpress blog on that (since they claimed I could run up to 25 Mysql databases and unlimited websites)

WRONG…ooh boy was I ever WRONG>>>>

I could write for the next three days about the serious issues I had hosting with them. By the end of two weeks I was searching for a place to move.

For one thing, I could not actually save out a site map. Not a complete one. The service would time-out while the sitemap was being written. Then google would try to crawl, and kick back 404 errors like crazy, because the sitemap was not complete.

I don’t understand how it could be so hard to write out a complete sitemap for a site that only had four blog posts…but it would time out.

When I tried to use SmartFTP to upload my site, it would often tell me that I could not connect, because there were too many connections open to the server. When I asked about it from the Godaddy tech-support (took them three days to answer) I was told to make sure I didn’t have multiple sessions open. (I didn’t)

I tried CuteFTP, Filezilla and two others. Same problems.

I finally got help at the SmartFTP site. They said that it just meant that my host (they didn’t know who that was) probably over-sold websites on servers, and they needed to raise the number of FTP connections allowed to the server at one time. They gave me detailed instructions, which I forwarded to Tech-support at Godaddy. (they never responded to that one)

Then, I bought a nice new theme. And I wanted to change something in the style.CSS file.( Nothing major)

I went in and changed one line of code. It took 11 minutes to save it. (yes I timed it)

I have a good connection to the internet. Business class Road-runner. I saw no reason why a 18kb file should time out on a save.

The final straw was when I tried to make a new post and save it. It timed out again, but it had the database open when it did. The database got corrupted and my wordpress went down. I had to upload the backup of mysql database and re-import it. (and with the site timing out every few minutes..that was NOT an easy task) It took almost a full day to import the database again, due to all the retries.

The user control panel they have is useless. I was used to Cpanel, but any of the nice hosting packages would have been fine with me. You have to wade through the silly godaddy site to even get to your control panel. You don’t just have one within your own site. (That too..is shared among all users it would seem)

Every single page was designed MORE to sell me something, than it was to help me set up what I had actually bought!

So…from now on, I will only use Godaddy for registering a domain name. They can Keep their Hosting service!

I could not agree more. I have had the unfortunate run in with Godaddy hosting with some of my customers as well as family. I have been an “IT GUY” for over 15 years and I have hosted MANY of my own servers including a few I still host now. Many of my clients that I have ran into over the years were concerned with private hosting and were under the impression that companies such as Godaddy were the only choice for hosting, because if they are so big, than they HAVE to have the best server and most solid redundancy. Trying to explain to clients that this is not the case, is difficult sometimes. When using a larger hosting company, you become a part of the GIGANTIC game of numbers.

Iwould rather use a hosting company that has 100 clients per server and only has 98.7% uptime than a company that STUFFS 500-1500 clients toa server but guarantees 99.9% uptime.

I looked into the proivider you are using for this particular blog, and I will say that I have not heard of them until now, but I havehad tremendous speeds accessing your blog and ZERO issues with updates.

So congrats Lark on you new hosting service, I hope they are as good to you as they have been to me….Your reader.
