(A moss snake kicks YOU for 1!)

June 21, 2008 by Fancy

When I first started this game we all call EQ back in March, 2000, I wasn’t sure what class to choose. I looked at all that were available to me at the time, and a wizard struck me as one that might be neat to play. I never thought I would actually get as involved in the game as I did, so it really didn’t matter much to me. So, I created my little dark elf wizard and off I went into this massive world we call Norrath.

Let it be known it took me 3 hours just to figure out how to get out of the city. There were no beautifully drawn maps to look up online, let alone a mapping system in the game.

We were all expected to run head first into walls and what have you trying to find the “zone”. So, I finally get my first(and not nearly my last) “Loading, please wait…” And I am in this hallway in a place called Nektulos Forest. Immediately I am full of ambition.

My first ever encounter was with a moss snake… and as I am putting forth my best effort to make my mark on this epic encounter I notice What?! Did I just read that right? A snake kicked me? What kind of world was I in, where snakes had legs and I wore a bikini everywhere I went. It was madness. But, I figured anything can happen in THEIR world… since it was infact theirs.

I of course lost my first fight, as I had no clothes, no money and no spells. But I was having the time of my life. And then I hear from on high (the OOC channel) that there is a person by the name of Charmm giving away a robe at something called the “newbie log” . Well, I had no clue what that was. But, if he was talking about it, it had to be the place to go. So I ran around aimlessly looking for this elusive log. And BAM! Loading please wait… It would seem I had found a skeleton. Oh woe is me… one hit and I was down.

While on my way to try to stumble on my poor sack of bones… I ran across this regal looking elf. He stood high on this log in his beautiful teal and white robe. I was in awe. He must be very high level (20ish) to be wearing such nice armor. I ran up to him in my very plucky way and waved at him… to which he laughed at me and handed me my first ever robe. It was a Gossimer Robe… and to this day I still have it in my bank. I am now a level 80 wizard with very much experience behind me. But I never have forgotten that day. I still go back to the newbie log and sit sometimes and remember all the goofy things I did there , all the times I died. But most of all, that wonderful elf who gave me a robe to cover up my naked blue butt.

I am still very dear friends with that regal dark elf enchanter named Charmm. It’s amazing how after 8 years I still have that robe, and him as a friend. To many this game may just look like a bunch of cartoons running around killing meanies. But you have to sit back and think, behind those cartoons are very real people, and with those people we form very real friendships.

I still visit Marenkor and get drunk downstairs at the Blind Fish and watch the Leatherfoot Deputy swimming by the window. I have even killed the Deputy a few times when in the mood. But mostly it’s to gaze out those windows and inform Marenkor to hand me my bottle as I head for the stairs.

Ok I have to admit, when I logged on to EQ the other day..the second thing I did was run to the Blind Fish and buy a beer.

(the first thing I did..was try to remember how to mem a spell so I could port to Lava and go there..but that is a story for another day)
